Sintering technology

Unlike the processes of classic metallurgy, which always involves the solidification of molten metal, sintering is based on metal powders. Around 1908 the first self-lubricating parts appeared, followed in 1935 by the manufacturing of the first mechanical parts for the automotive industry. Powder metallurgy, or sintering, makes possible to obtain extremely accurate geometric parts, weighing from a few grams to several kilos, which are very resistant. Sintering is particularly well adapted to the medium and very large parts series.

Compaction or Compression

Presses may be mechanical or hydraulic, the choice of force applied depending on the part to be compacted. At Porite, compression strength measures from 0.T5 to 1 600T.

The compaction tool is filled with gravity and is composed of a matrix (outer geometry shape of the part) of upper and lower punches. Their number will depend on the tool design specs from the engineering department, and the type of press selected.

This first operation creates only the geometrical shape of the part without the required mechanical characteristics.

Sintering

From a practical point of view, the operation of sintering must respond to 3 expectations:

Confer the mechanical properties to the compressed part (resistance, hardness).
Maintain maximum dimensional accuracy (nominal dimension and minimal distortion).
Be the most economical possible.

Sintering temperatures are between 1120°C and 1135°C, Some parts require high temperature sintering from 1200°C to 1350°C.

Sizing

Sintering operation generates an increase in dimensional dispersion and shape defects.
If the sintered part no longer meets the required specs, a calibration press may be necessary.
